Darkness and voices from the radio
see me through another long night,
working overtime to find a piece
of an illusive, possible life, dreamed,
while thoughts of days and years, lived,
bubble ruthlessly against the walls of their prison.

Cold rushes in through the cracked window,
mixing with exhausting heat from below,
leaving me in the middle.

I search for gravel and find it,
but it leads nowhere and I lose my steady pace,
believing in the mysteries that the night keeps.

We are many hours from dawn,
and in this eerie middling sequence,
we must be wary of trickery and traps.

Far from the beach, with its heat and calmness,
this night, menacing and impure,
reaches into the cabin and steals a glimpse of our fear.
